課程概述

This course focuses on aspects of oral expression which contribute to fluency in English.

We will explore techniques to improve our performance in spoken English, including pronunciation and intonation, grammar, and vocabulary in English among other topics.

The first semester is a review of oral skills; the second semester focuses more on the topic of conversation.

課程目標
By the end of the academic year we will have:
1. Discussed the interplay between pronunciation and intonation in oral communication;
2. Developed individualized vocabulary lists which reflect each student's needs in English (including awareness of register);
3. Analyzed and discussed oral communication in English and the techniques to improve it
4. Applied the above components to context-rich situations;
5. Discussed language learning strategies; and
6. Analyzed our participation in conversations from an interpersonal communication perspective

課程要求
(1) Punctual class attendance. Students need to attend class in order to improve their speaking skills in English. So, it only makes sense to attend every class. To encourage this practice, this course will strictly follow the university attendance policy. If you must miss a class, be sure to print out the student absence document and give it to the teacher within the time limit. (Explanation: The computer-based absence notification system used by the university does not include your English name, so it is difficult for the teacher to use it. Only hard copies (paper copies) of the absence document will be accepted. A copy of the form is available on the announcements page of this class webpage.)

(2) Participation in peer review groups. Students will be engaged in small group work during class time. Each student is expected to be well-prepared for this work and to contribute enthusiastically to it. The group effort will influence how much is learned by the group: any student not fully participating will hinder the progress of the group.

(3) Assignments. Our syllabus is designed to promote student skills in English. It is very important that all students keep up with the assignments. All assignments must be handed in on time; late assignments will not be accepted. If you find you are having a problem completing your assignment on time, contact the teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements for submitting an assignment late. Contact the teacher at class email address given on the course syllabus in class.
